Supplements & Immune Support

Everyone is different and it is best to follow your doctor recommendations when buying supplements. This is a list of the vitamins and supplements that I take daily. Certain immune support supplements are essential for improving immune system function and maintaining your health. Often, those with Lyme and co-infections have other viral infections that have re-activated, such as the Epstein Barr Virus. I am providing the brand that I personally use and have extensively researched for safety and effectiveness.

While it is extremely important for you to have your vitamin/hormone levels checked to see if your body is low on essential nutrients, there are a few things that you can be taking now for overall health and immune support.  *I have placed a star beside the supplements that I believe are essential for those who have Lyme or a chronic illness.

Brain & Heart Health

Energy & Endurance

  • Methyl B-12*: Jarrow brand 5000 mcg daily.  Doctor recommended brand
  • Mito Max  - Energy, Focus and Stamina.  2 per day - love love love
  • Peppermint Essential Oil - awakens the brain.  Rub a drop in your palms and breathe in or diffuse in the room.
  • N Acetyl L-Cysteine - NAC - Promotes glutathione production. Antioxidants play an important role in the prevention and elimination of free radicals and reactive oxygen species

Biofilm Busters

  • xylitol by Jarrow - When integrated into a Lyme protocol that kills the bacteria (antibiotics or natural protocols) the combination of xylitol and lactoferrin has been shown to break down biofilm.  Here is a study on the subject.  Here is a simplified explanation of how it works.

Peace, Focus, and Calm & Sleep

Pain & Inflammation

  • Tumeric or Curcurmin*: Organic India Tumeric 2 capsules, 3 x's per day.  I have also used Jarrow brand Curcurmin.Take with a fatty snack for absorption. Do not take if you are on blood thinners without a doctor's approval.
  • Deep Blue Essential Oil or Rub from Doterra - for topical pain relief
  • Basil Oil - For inflammation and spasms - 2 drops in a tsp of fractionated coconut oil topically on the area of pain/inflammation/spasm

Digestive Health

  • Probiotic*: Custom Probiotics or Ultimate Flora Critical Care 50 Billion.  It's best to use probiotics that need to be refrigerated. 
  • Saccharomyces boulardii: This is important if you are on antibiotics to keep you from developing Cdiff or a Candida issue.  I purchased the Nutricology brand as per my doctor.
  • Raw Apple Cider Vinegar: Braggs raw apple cider vinegar is great for when your tummy is feeling funky.  I use this when I have any digestive issues.  1 tsp in a cup of lukewarm water.  You can add a little maple syrup or honey to sweeten.  This always makes me feel better.

Other Immune and Brain Support as needed

If I am catching a cold or flu or if I am having difficulty with fatigue, I will add the following:

  • DMG: NOW brand 125 mg in the morning for energy & brain focus
  • Proboost Thymic Protein A - Immune support.  Take at first signs of flu or cold.  Follow box instructions.  This is a miracle supplement and I cannot recommend it enough. Buy this and have it in the pantry for days when you need an immune boost. I love this stuff and can't say enough about how it has helped me.
  • Freeze Dried Garlic Pills
  • Vitamin C - I use C Salts - 1,000-4,000 mg per day.

The MTHFR defect

Please make sure you are tested for the mthfr genetic defect.  If you are not getting better with treatment, this may be your issue.  I have the C677 defect, which means I cannot absorb folate from my foods.  Therefore, I must supplement with 5MTHF. 

I have used both brands below.  I am currently using the Thorne.

Anemia

There a many who suffer from low ferritin levels.  Make sure to have your ferritin levels checked.  This is different from a regular iron test.

IMPORTANT DISLAIMER: I am not a medical professional. When adding anything to your diet, always check with your doctor first to make sure they don't interact with medications. Also, when adding a supplement, add one at a time. Wait a few days to see if you feel better or worse. Note these effects as it will help you determine if the supplement is working. Discuss any concerns with your doctor. Some things do make you feel worse at first because your body may be releasing toxins. If the reaction is intense, discontinue use and speak with your doctor. Otherwise, add another supplement to your regimen and continue with the same process until you have added all of the supplements that you need to take. I love this method of adding supplements because when one makes me feel better, I know that I will continue using it. Some things, like CoQ10, take a while to have a positive effect, so don't give up if it doesn't work right away.
